Book title: The Land

Author: Mildred D. Taylor

Category: historical fiction

Summary: Paul Logan has always wanted land of his own. This story by Mildred D. Taylor shows how this half-black, half-white boy grows into a man, and how he gets the land that continues his legacy years after his death.  You can read about that in the sequels, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Let the Circle be Unbroken.

Personal response: I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, because you really learn to love the characters.

Anne Frank

Reviewer's name: Andrea R.
Role: student
Grade: 8
Book title: Anne Frank and Me
Author: Cherie Bennett & Jeff Gottesfeld
Category: historical fiction
Summary: Nicole Burns was just a internet-savvy, boy-crazed tenth grader who lived a very priviledged life in the surburbs of America. Suddenly Nicole finds herself in panic as she hears gunfire in an Anne Frank exhibit. When she faints she awakes in Paris,France. She finds that she is a priviledged Jewish girl during World War 2. As war continues Nicole is faced with life and death situations. Eventually Nicole comes face-to-face with Anne Frank. As Nicole is about to die in a gas chamber she awakens in modern time. Nicole learns that she should be more grateful that she lives in modern times, and learns how valuable life really is.
Personal response: I would reccommend Anne Frank And Me, because people may say that a war like WWII can't happen again, because we know better now, but isn't that what everybody else thought DURING WWII? This book takes you through a journey of many hardships. When you are reading you feel as if you ARE this Jewish girl. The book teaches you that as most teens you think typical things (i.e. what should i wear, does he/she like me, etc.),whereas teens during WWII thougt of fear, and death on a regular basis. All in all, this book I think really gets a powerful message across.
